Doloris May Siddall, a 29-year-old woman, went missing from Long Beach, California, on August 23, 1961. At the time, Doloris was pregnant and had three young children, whom she left in the care of a babysitter before disappearing. She lived in the 700 block of Redondo Avenue and worked as a barmaid. Leading up to her disappearance, Doloris had confided to friends that she was "in trouble" and planned to meet with Hugh MacLeod Pheaster, a man known for performing illegal abortions.
On the day she vanished, Doloris borrowed $100 to pay Pheaster for the procedure. Pheaster later admitted that she had died accidentally during the abortion, after which he disposed of her body in a remote area near Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear Lake in San Bernardino County. Despite his confession and a lie detector test confirming his statement, multiple searches of the area failed to uncover her remains.
Pheaster was acquitted of murder charges in her case, but was later convicted of performing illegal abortions in other cases and became involved in a 1974 kidnapping for ransom.
