In the summer of 1975, a 71-year-old man named Calvin Brazier traveled from his home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the city of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He was a member of the North Providence Baptist Church and was accompanying his church group on a bus trip to attend a gospel music program at the Joy Hope Holy Church.
