Richard Cobler, a 27-year-old scientist and PhD candidate from Oregon State University, went missing on September 28, 1979, while aboard the research vessel *Wecoma*. The ship had departed Honolulu Harbor earlier that morning, and by 9 a.m., about five miles southwest of Oahu, a routine lifeboat drill was called.
