Their adventure, however, would soon turn into a desperate struggle for survival against the raw and unpredictable power of nature. As the day progressed, the weather took a dramatic turn for the worse. The seas, once navigable, became a treacherous expanse of churning water, with waves reportedly reaching six to eight feet high near the shore. It is believed that these increasingly violent conditions stranded Dixon and Florin on the island, cutting off their return to the relative safety of the Cougar. As darkness enveloped the island, a series of signals pierced the night. An SOS was flashed towards the Cougar, followed by the firing of a distress flare, a clear indication of the dire situation the two men were facing. Curiously, a non-distress flare was also fired later, adding a layer of ambiguity to their final known communications. The crew of the Cougar, aware of the escalating danger, attempted a rescue mission that same Thursday night but were forced to turn back by the formidable and rough seas. When they were finally able to make their way to shore on Friday, November 13, a grim discovery awaited them. There was no trace of Kaino Dixon, Dwight Florin, or their skiff, the Dawn. An extensive search of the area yielded no signs of the missing men. The unforgiving Alaskan wilderness had seemingly swallowed them whole, leaving behind a profound and sorrowful mystery. In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, both Kaino Dixon and Dwight Florin are presumed to have perished at sea. This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the inherent dangers faced by those who make their living on the turbulent waters of Alaska, a testament to the power of the sea and the fragility of human life in the face of its might.
