In the winter of 1987, a journey across the Alaskan landscape turned tragic for 22-year-old Wayne Marvin Captain. On December 18th, he and a companion departed from Ruby, Alaska, on a snowmachine, with the destination of Galena ahead of them. At the time of his disappearance, Wayne was an American Indian/Alaska Native male with black hair and brown eyes, standing at 5 feet 4 inches and weighing around 150 pounds. He was reportedly last seen wearing a tan down jacket and green flight pants. The route they chose would take them over the formidable Yukon River, a common mode of travel in the region, yet one that carried inherent risks with the ever-changing ice conditions. The trip took a devastating turn approximately four miles west of Ruby. While traversing the frozen expanse of the Yukon River, the two men encountered an unexpected stretch of open water. Their snowmachine broke through the ice and sank into the frigid depths below. The machine was later found about 30 feet from where its tracks abruptly ended at the edge of the open water. In the immediate aftermath of the accident, a search was launched. Tragically, Wayne's traveling companion was located, but he was deceased. For 24 grueling days, searchers relentlessly dragged the open water area of the river in a desperate attempt to find Wayne. The extensive and prolonged efforts, however, proved unsuccessful. Despite the determined search, Wayne Captain was never recovered from the Yukon River. The Alaska State Troopers investigated the incident, but the unforgiving conditions of the river held their secrets. The case remains a sorrowful chapter in the history of the region, a stark reminder of the dangers of travel in the Alaskan wilderness. The incident on the Yukon River that day claimed one life and left the fate of another a lasting mystery, with Wayne officially still considered a missing person.
