Stanley
Michna
32
White / Caucasian
Male
On a harsh winter day, December 10, 1988, the vast and unforgiving waters of Alaska became the final known location for 32-year-old Stanley Thomas Michna. A resident of Dillingham, Alaska, Michna was the captain of the 115-foot stern trawler, the Arctic II. On that fateful day, a severe storm churned the seas, and approximately 55 miles north of Unimak Pass, the Arctic II succumbed to the tempest and sank. Michna, a Caucasian male with brown hair and blue eyes, standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 185 pounds, was lost to the waves. At the time of the incident, he was reportedly wearing an orange survival suit over a white t-shirt and blue jeans. The sinking of the Arctic II was a sudden and tragic event that resulted in the loss of two lives. Along with Captain Michna, a 29-year-old crew member named Gary Heeney also perished. In a stroke of fortune amidst the disaster, three other crew members managed to survive the sinking. They were rescued from the frigid waters by the crew of another fishing vessel, the American Beauty, which was in the vicinity and responded to the distress. The survivors were a testament to the perils faced by those who make their living on the Alaskan seas. The Alaska State Troopers in Anchorage are the primary agency that has investigated the disappearance of Stanley Michna. The case of Stanley Michna is a somber reminder of the dangers inherent in the commercial fishing industry, particularly in the challenging conditions of the Bering Sea. Despite the passage of time, his case remains open, a lingering ache for his family and community. The official record states that Stanley Michna was on the fishing vessel Arctic II when it sank with two crew members. The lack of a recovery has left his final moments to the imagination, a narrative of a struggle against the overwhelming power of nature. The overview of this case is one of a sudden and catastrophic event at sea, the loss of a young captain and his crewmate, and the enduring mystery that accompanies a disappearance in the vastness of the ocean.
