In the vast and often unforgiving waters of Alaska, the story of 37-year-old Jeremy Hunter is one of many that end with the sea's chilling embrace. On March 9, 1993, he, along with his crewmates, vanished from Dillingham, Alaska, aboard the fishing vessel, the Lady of Good Voyage. The vessel, an 86-foot steel cod trawler, and its entire crew disappeared, leaving behind a wake of unanswered questions and grieving families. Jeremy, known to some as "Jay" Scott-Hunter, was on the vessel with skipper Gregory Schwindt, and fellow crewmen Glenn "Eddie" Hoover and Larry Hoover. The last known communication from the ship was on March 8, 1993, when the skipper reported that the vessel was loaded with Pollock and was heading back to Dutch Harbor that evening. The Lady of Good Voyage had departed from Dutch Harbor the previous day, between 2:00 and 3:00 PM, to fish for Pollock. On the day of its disappearance, there were normal radio conversations with the skipper, Greg Schwindt, at 9:30 AM and again between 10:30 AM and 12:00 PM. During the last conversation, Schwindt confirmed they were loaded and on their way back to Dutch Harbor. The weather conditions at the time were reported as having winds from the south-southwest at 10 to 15 knots, with seas ranging from three to six feet. Despite these seemingly manageable conditions, an Emergency Locator Transmitter signal was picked up from the vessel on March 8th, signaling that the crew was in distress. A search was launched in response to the distress signal, but what was found only deepened the mystery and sorrow. Search and rescue teams discovered a crushed life ring and an empty life raft, stark and silent testaments to the fate of the Lady of Good Voyage and its crew. No trace of Jeremy Hunter, Gregory Schwindt, Glenn Hoover, or Larry Hoover was ever found. The case remains a painful memory for the families and a somber reminder of the perils faced by those who make their living on the sea. The disappearance of the Lady of Good Voyage and its crew is a haunting narrative of loss, one of the many maritime tragedies that have occurred in Alaskan waters, leaving behind only questions and the enduring grief of those left to wonder what happened in those final moments.
