In the vast and unforgiving waters of the Bering Sea, a routine voyage turned into an enduring mystery in September 1993. Peter Soileau, a 35-year-old man from Dillingham, Alaska, was aboard the 58-foot crab fishing vessel, the Nettie H, when it vanished without a trace. The vessel, with its five-person crew, departed from King Cove, Alaska, with the intention of reaching Saint Paul Island.
Peter was joined by his brothers, David and Daniel Soileau, as well as Blake Grinstein and Julie Mereness. Their journey was considered standard for the experienced crew, but the Nettie H never made it to its destination, leaving behind a void of information and a lifetime of questions for their loved ones.
The disappearance of the Nettie H prompted an extensive search and rescue operation coordinated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The search covered an immense area of the Bering Sea, spanning approximately 23,000 square miles. Despite the exhaustive efforts, no sign of the vessel or its crew was ever found. Tragically, the raft contained the remains of Julie Mereness, one of the crew members.
