His vehicle was later found abandoned and burned in a vineyard near Lodi, California. Martin was reported missing on October 11, 1993.

A key aspect of this case is the suspected involvement of the notorious "Speed Freak Killers," Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog, who were convicted for multiple murders in the 1980s and 1990s. Martin had known ties to Shermantine, with his daughter identifying Shermantine in a photo lineup and stating that her father had worked and used drugs with both men. Investigators believe Martin may have been one of their victims, though his remains have never been recovered. While Shermantine has led authorities to other victims' burial sites, Martin's fate remains uncertain, and foul play is strongly suspected.
