In the late summer of 1994, the community of Hampstead, North Carolina, was unsettled by the disappearance of 68-year-old Richmond Nixon. On September 2, 1994, Mr. Nixon, a Black / African American male, informed friends and neighbors that he was going for a walk. His intended path was down Highway 17 and into the woods near his Woodside Drive home. He was reportedly wearing a yellow raincoat, dark pants, a dark blue shirt, and black boots with yellow tips.
Tragically, he never returned from his walk and has not been seen or heard from since. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as being 5'9" and weighing approximately 160 pounds, with gray or partially gray hair, brown eyes, and a mole near his left eye.
The days and weeks following Mr. Nixon's failure to return were filled with concern as the Pender County Sheriff's Office initiated an investigation into his disappearance. The case, however, grew cold over the years with very few leads emerging to shed light on what might have happened to him. A significant, though ultimately heartbreaking, development came in 1997 when investigators received a tip suggesting that Mr. Nixon may have been killed and buried in a shallow grave. This information prompted extensive searches of the wooded areas near his home, the same woods he had set out to walk through on that fateful day.
Despite the promising nature of the tip and the diligent search efforts by law enforcement, no trace of Richmond Nixon was ever found. The searches of the woods yielded no clues, and the investigation returned to a standstill. His disappearance remains an unsolved mystery, leaving his family and the Hampstead community with decades of unanswered questions. The Pender County Sheriff's Office continues to classify his case as an endangered missing person and encourages anyone with information to come forward.
