Kenneth Abell, a 21-year-old active-duty Marine, went missing on February 12, 1999, while on a kayaking trip with two fellow Marines near the Mokulua Islands, off the coast of Lanikai Beach in Kailua, Hawaii. After paddling to one of the islands, Abell was walking near the water's edge when he was swept into the ocean by a powerful wave. Despite an extensive search that included divers and helicopters, Abell's body was never recovered.
