The life of Kenneth L. Abell, a 21-year-old active duty U.S. Marine, was full of promise in early 1999. Stationed in Hawaii, Kenneth served as an accounting analyst at Camp Smith. On February 12, 1999, he and two fellow Marines decided to spend some time enjoying the natural beauty of the islands by paddling out to the Mokulua Islands, located about a mile offshore from Lanikai Beach in Kailua.
