On a summer day in June of 2004, 13-year-old Steven Lee Andrews was with another boy in Bethel, Alaska. The two were seen playing in a kayak near Kotlik Slough. Steven, an American Indian / Alaska Native male with black hair and brown eyes, was wearing blue jeans and a green and black hooded sweater that day. He also had on a pair of white Spaulding sneakers. At some point, the kayak the boys were in overturned. The report of Steven's disappearance was made to the Alaska State Troopers on June 18, 2004. During the investigation, the white sneakers that were later identified as belonging to Steven were found inside the overturned kayak. It is believed that Steven may have drowned in the incident. He has scars behind both of his ears. At the time he went missing, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighed 130 pounds. The disappearance of Steven Lee Andrews is considered a suspected accident. Although he is presumed to have drowned, his case remains open. The Alaska State Troopers continue to be the investigating agency for this missing person case. Steven's disappearance is a sad reminder of the potential dangers of playing in open water, and a heartbreaking loss for his family and community who are left without answers.
