In the early hours of a March morning in 2001, a 29-year-old man named Nathan Evan embarked on a snow machine journey from Russian Mission, Alaska, destined for Marshall. He was traveling alone across the vast and unforgiving Alaskan landscape. Concern grew when he did not arrive at his destination. The last time anyone had contact with him was on March 13, 2001, from the Bethel area. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as an American Indian/Alaska Native male with black hair and brown eyes, standing at 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing approximately 185 pounds. He had distinct tattoos on his left finger and on his upper and lower left arm. He was reportedly wearing a black Carhartt jacket, black snow pants, and white VB boots. A search was initiated to locate Nathan. The search party eventually discovered snow machine tracks that led to a perilous open lead of water in the Yukon River, approximately 20 miles downriver from Russian Mission. This grim discovery pointed to a tragic accident. The conditions on the river can be unpredictable, and travel, even for the experienced, carries inherent risks. The open water in the midst of the frozen river was a dangerous obstacle for any traveler. At the site where the tracks ended, searchers were able to recover his snow machine, along with his rifle and shotgun, from the icy water. However, there was no sign of Nathan himself. Despite the recovery of his belongings, extensive search efforts in the area did not lead to his location. The unforgiving environment and the powerful currents of the Yukon River presented significant challenges to the search and recovery operations. The case is currently under the jurisdiction of the Alaska State Troopers, and it remains an active investigation, a painful and unresolved chapter for his family and community. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance highlight the potential dangers of traveling in the remote and wild landscapes of Alaska.
