In the spring of 2007, a 21-year-old Japanese citizen named Masumi Watanabe was visiting the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Described as a shy and artistic young woman, she was staying with a distant relative and volunteering her time at a local elementary school. On the morning of April 12, 2007, she went for a walk along Pupukea Road, a routine she often enjoyed.
