In the remote and rugged landscape of Unalaska, Alaska, 56-year-old John Franklin Courage, a fisherman, vanished on December 30, 2010. He was last seen during the night at the Unisea Harbor View Bar. Courage was employed on the fishing vessel F/V-Alaska Trojan and had been on boat watch duty when he disappeared. Concern grew when he did not return to the vessel, which was moored at the Crowley Dock in Captains Bay. An initial search of the boat revealed that his personal belongings, including his wallet and identification, had been left behind in his stateroom. The investigation into Courage's disappearance was handled by the Unalaska Department of Public Safety. A significant and troubling discovery was made when Courage's survival suit, which was missing from the F/V-Alaska Trojan, was found floating in the Iliuliuk South Channel. This led to extensive search efforts in the surrounding waters. Divers were deployed to search Captains Bay near where the fishing vessel was docked. The Unalaska Department of Public Safety, along with the Alaska State Troopers, conducted a perimeter search of Captains Bay and an area known as Little South America, hoping to find any trace of the missing fisherman. Investigators also interviewed Courage's acquaintances to determine if he had made contact with anyone. Despite the search and investigation, the circumstances surrounding John Courage's disappearance remain uncertain. Authorities considered two main possibilities: that he chose to leave on his own, or that he had died. The challenging and vast environment of rural Alaska makes locating a missing person incredibly difficult. Information about Courage was circulated through flyers posted around Unalaska and his case was entered into state and national missing persons databases. At the time he was last seen, he was wearing a red shirt, a black jacket, and jeans. The overview of the case suggests a man who was part of the fabric of the local fishing community, whose sudden absence left behind more questions than answers. The discovery of his survival suit pointed towards a possible tragedy at sea, yet without further evidence, the exact events of that December night are unknown, leaving his case an unresolved mystery in the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness.
