In the winter of 2015, a young man named John Switzer, 24 years old and from Starkville, Mississippi, vanished while on a vacation in Gulf Shores, Alabama. He was last in contact with his family on a Saturday, when he took his kayak out into the Gulf of Mexico for a day of fishing. The last communication his family received was a panoramic photograph he took from his kayak, showing the vast expanse of the water before him.
When he failed to return home as expected and did not show up for work, his family grew deeply concerned and asked a friend to check on him at their beachfront condo. Upon arrival, the friend found Switzer's car parked with the keys still inside the home, but there was no sign of John or his kayak.
The discovery prompted his family to officially report him missing, launching a large-scale search and rescue operation. The U.S. Coast Guard, along with various Alabama police and fire departments, initiated an extensive search by air, land, and sea. For days, crews scoured more than 2,115 square miles of the Gulf of Mexico, hoping to find any trace of the missing kayaker. Volunteers also combed the beaches, looking for any sign that he may have made it back to shore.
