A fishing trip turned to tragedy in the waters of Aialik Bay, Alaska, leaving 60-year-old Joshua Green and two others missing after their boat capsized on May 22, 2024. The group of four had departed from Seward on May 21 in a 22-foot Hewes Craft boat but encountered poor sea conditions and weather that prevented their return. A mayday call was made to the U.S. Coast Guard at approximately 5:30 a.m. on May 22, stating the vessel was taking on water.
Also on board with Joshua Green were his son, 29-year-old Caleb Green, his 29-year-old nephew Hayden Green, and 60-year-old Melanie Porter.
A multi-agency search and rescue operation was launched in response to the distress call. The U.S. Coast Guard dispatched air and marine assets, and several good Samaritan vessels also responded to the area to assist. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew located the overturned vessel. A nearby tour boat, the Skana, recovered the body of Hayden Green from the water. Despite an extensive search covering approximately 95 square miles for a combined nine hours, the U.S. Coast Guard suspended their active search for Joshua Green, Caleb Green, and Melanie Porter. The Alaska State Troopers also activated their Dive, Search, Rescue, and Recovery Team to continue the effort to locate the three missing individuals.
Official reports later confirmed that Joshua Green, along with his son Caleb and nephew Hayden, were deceased as a result of the boating accident. An obituary for the Green family stated they lost their lives doing something they loved and doing it together. Joshua was remembered as a dedicated educator, wrestling coach, and high school administrator for over 30 years, positively influencing many young people. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and musician. The case is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers of the Alaskan waters, as a recreational fishing trip ended in a devastating loss for the Green family and the Seward community.
