On May 22, 2024, 29-year-old Caleb Green, a male from Anchorage, Alaska, was aboard a 22-foot boat in Aialik Bay with three other individuals. The group had departed from Seward the previous day but encountered deteriorating sea conditions and bad weather, which prevented their return. In the early morning hours, at approximately 5:30 a.m., the vessel began taking on water, prompting a mayday call to the U.S. Coast Guard. By the time a rescue helicopter arrived, the boat had capsized in the bay, which is located about 35 miles southwest of Seward. A nearby Good Samaritan vessel, the Skana, was first to arrive at the scene of the overturned boat and was able to recover one of the passengers, 29-year-old Hayden Green, who was unresponsive in the water. The other three individuals, including Caleb Green, were not found. The other missing passengers were identified as 60-year-old Joshua Green of Seward and 60-year-old Melanie Porter, also of Seward. The Coast Guard initiated an extensive search, covering approximately 95 square miles over a combined nine hours. Despite these efforts, the three missing individuals were not located. The active search for Caleb Green and the other two missing boaters was suspended by the Coast Guard. The weather at the time of the incident was reported to have 20 mph winds with gusts up to 30 mph and 12-foot seas. Following the suspension of the Coast Guard's search, the Alaska State Troopers activated the Alaska Dive, Search, Rescue and Recovery Team to continue the effort to locate the three missing people. The case remains a distressing and unresolved event for the families and the community, highlighting the inherent dangers of the Alaskan waters. The tragic incident resulted in one confirmed fatality and left three others, including Caleb Green, missing in the wake of their vessel capsizing in the challenging conditions of Aialik Bay.
