In the vast and often unforgiving landscape of Alaska, the story of William Lamont, Sr., a 77-year-old American Indian / Alaska Native man, is one of an elder lost to the powerful currents of the Yukon River. On May 5, 2016, a day that likely began like any other in the small community of Alakanuk, William set out in a canoe with two other individuals. Their intention was to cross the Yukon River Slough, a waterway that is a lifeline for the people of the region, but one that also holds immense power and danger. The river, a dominant feature of the Alaskan wilderness, can be unpredictable, with strong currents and cold temperatures that demand respect and caution. The journey across the slough took a tragic turn when the canoe capsized, plunging all three occupants into the frigid water. In the chaos that followed, two of the individuals were successfully pulled from the river, their lives spared from the immediate threat of the cold and the current. However, William was not as fortunate. Despite what can be presumed were desperate efforts to locate him in the immediate aftermath of the accident, he could not be found. The vastness of the river and the swiftness of its flow would have made any rescue attempt incredibly challenging. He was wearing a blue winter coat, blue jeans, and rubber boots at the time of the incident. The disappearance of William Lamont, Sr. cast a shadow over the community and left his family with unanswered questions and the pain of an unresolved loss. A GoFundMe page was created by his daughter to help family members travel to Alakanuk in the wake of the tragedy. In the years following his disappearance, his case has been documented by the Alaska State Troopers and entered into national missing persons databases. The circumstances of his disappearance point to a tragic accident, a stark reminder of the ever-present dangers of life in the Alaskan wilderness. The overview of the case is that William Lamont, Sr. is presumed to have drowned after the canoe he was in overturned in the Yukon River Slough. Despite the rescue of his two companions, he was never recovered from the water.
