On a day that began like any other, 60-year-old Melanie Porter, a female resident of Seward, Alaska, found herself in a perilous situation that would lead to her disappearance on May 22, 2024. She was one of four people aboard a 22-foot vessel that had departed from Seward the previous day. The group was in Aialik Bay, a body of water about 35 miles southwest of Seward, when they encountered treacherous sea conditions and bad weather that prevented their return to shore. Early on the morning of May 22nd, the vessel began taking on water, prompting a mayday call to the U.S. Coast Guard around 5:30 a.m. By the time a rescue helicopter arrived, the craft had capsized. A nearby commercial tour boat, the Skana, was the first to reach the scene and was able to recover one of the passengers, 29-year-old Hayden Green, who was unfortunately deceased. Still missing in the frigid waters of Aialik Bay were Melanie Porter, along with 60-year-old Joshua Green and 29-year-old Caleb Green. The U.S. Coast Guard initiated an extensive search operation, covering approximately 95 square miles over a combined nine hours with helicopter and airplane crews, as well as a search boat. Despite these efforts, they were unable to locate any of the three missing individuals. The active search was suspended the following day. The Alaska State Troopers also activated their Dive, Search, Rescue, and Recovery Team to aid in the search for Melanie Porter and the other two missing boaters, but as of the evening of May 23rd, they had not been found. The case remains a somber reminder of the unforgiving nature of the sea, as the search for Melanie Porter and her companions was met with immense challenges, leaving their families and the community in a state of uncertainty and grief.
