In the winter of 1983, a 30-year-old woman named Susan Edmondson vanished into the vast and unforgiving Alaskan wilderness. On February 1st, she was a passenger on a green and white Bellanca Scout aircraft, bearing the tail number N8639V, that departed from Melozi Hot Springs. The small ski-plane, piloted by William Robideau, was destined for Fairbanks, a journey over some of the most remote and rugged terrain in North America. Alongside Susan and the pilot was another passenger, 29-year-old Kenneth Erlewine. The trio was expected in Fairbanks, but they never arrived, and no communication was received from the aircraft after its departure. At the time of her disappearance, Susan had red/auburn hair and blue eyes. She was reportedly wearing a red parka, a stocking cap, mittens, and shoe packs, clothing appropriate for the harsh Alaskan winter, yet insufficient for prolonged survival without shelter. The disappearance of the Bellanca Scout triggered extensive search and rescue operations. Authorities were notified that the aircraft was overdue, and efforts were launched to locate the plane and its three occupants. The search covered a wide expanse of the desolate landscape between Melozi Hot Springs and Fairbanks, an area characterized by dense forests, rugged mountains, and unpredictable weather. Despite the determined efforts of search parties, no trace of the plane, Susan Edmondson, William Robideau, or Kenneth Erlewine was ever discovered. The complete and utter lack of wreckage, distress signals, or any form of debris has left the fate of the three individuals a profound and enduring mystery. The case of Susan Edmondson and the others aboard the ill-fated flight remains one of Alaska's many unsolved disappearances. The vastness of the state's wilderness has unfortunately been the final resting place for numerous aircraft and individuals who have vanished without a trace over the years. With no evidence to indicate what transpired on that February day, the circumstances surrounding the plane's disappearance are left to speculation. Theories range from catastrophic mechanical failure and sudden, severe weather to pilot error. The absence of any wreckage makes it impossible to determine the cause of the incident.
