In the summer of 2019, a young girl from El Salvador was navigating a world of uncertainty far from her home. Sixteen-year-old Laura G. Hernandez-Orellana had undertaken the arduous journey to the United States, a trip that led to her detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the southern border after she crossed into the country. Following this period of uncertainty, a semblance of stability appeared on the horizon when she was released into the care of a family member residing in
the small city of Huntingburg, Indiana. This new chapter in a new country, however, was to be tragically short-lived, marking the beginning of a prolonged and painful mystery for those who knew her story.
The stability that was hoped for proved to be fleeting. On August 19, 2019, just as she was beginning to settle into her new surroundings in Huntingburg, Laura vanished. On that day, the 16-year-old, described as being 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing around 130 to 140 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes, disappeared from her new home. The circumstances immediately following her disappearance suggested she had run away. Authorities believed she may have left with the intention of joining a boyfriend who was thought to be in Ohio. This belief provided an initial direction, yet it was a lead that would quickly grow cold, leaving a void of information and a growing sense of concern.
In the days and years that have followed, the search for Laura has been met with a frustrating silence. The Huntingburg Police Department opened an investigation, assigning case number HPD19080303 and entering her information into national databases for missing persons. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was also notified and began working on her case. Despite these efforts, as of August 2020, a full year after she was last seen, no significant contact or information regarding her whereabouts had been uncovered.
