He, along with his wife Julie Englehart and their daughter Brooke Roberts, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The family had moved back to Hesperia in 2019 after living in Ozark, Alabama, where John grew up. At the time of their disappearance, they were staying at a Motel 6 in Hesperia.
