In the spring of 2020, 40-year-old Erin Teressa Lawrence, also known as 'Pepper,' vanished from the small town of Cove in Polk County, Arkansas. She was last seen on April 2, 2020. Erin was a resident of the nearby Hatton community and was described as having sandy brown, shoulder-length hair and brown eyes. She had several distinctive tattoos, including a unicorn on her chest, a panther on her right leg, a rose on her left ankle, and the phrase 'Country girl can survive' on
her hip. Her sudden disappearance prompted a missing persons report, initiating an extensive investigation that would span over two years. Law enforcement agencies, including the Polk County Sheriff's Office and the Arkansas State Police, conducted over 100 interviews in their search for answers. The case was complicated by a lack of forthcoming witnesses.
The investigation into Erin's disappearance faced significant challenges for more than two years. A candlelight vigil was held in December 2021 to keep her memory in the public eye. A major breakthrough in the case came in the late summer of 2022. An inmate from the Polk County Detention Center led authorities to a heavily wooded area west of Hatfield, Arkansas, along the Mountain Fork River, on August 8, 2022. There, in a shallow grave, investigators discovered human remains. The scene was processed by the Polk County Sheriff's Office and the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division. The remains were then sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for identification. On September 6, 2022, it was confirmed that the remains were those of Erin Lawrence.
Following the positive identification of Erin's remains, the investigation focused on a prime suspect, Jerry Hopper, a 46-year-old resident of Cove with a criminal history. Hopper, who was already incarcerated on unrelated charges, was subsequently charged in connection with Erin's death. In February 2023, Jerry Hopper pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for his role in Erin Lawrence's death.
