In the spring of 2007, Katesia Marshae Weathers, a 26-year-old mother, found herself in a deeply troubling situation in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She had been in a volatile relationship with her boyfriend, Mario Scott, and the situation had escalated to a point where she feared for her life. Weathers had reported multiple incidents of domestic battery to the police, alleging severe physical abuse and threats from Scott. In one particularly brutal incident in January 2007, she reported that Scott had forcibly taken her outside, stripped her naked, and beaten her until she collapsed. Seeking a way out, Katesia sought help from a domestic violence shelter and, with their guidance, filed for an order of protection against him. A court hearing was scheduled, but Scott failed to appear, leading to a postponement. Despite the danger, Katesia had recently returned to Pine Bluff from Atlanta, Georgia, where she had been staying with relatives, because her grandmother was ill.
On May 22, 2007, the day of the rescheduled hearing for the protective order, neither Katesia nor Scott attended, and as a result, the order was dismissed. That same afternoon, around 2:30 p.m., Katesia was last seen walking on West 16th Street. She had left her grandmother's house in the 3200 block of West 16th Avenue with the intention of visiting a friend who lived in the vicinity of 17th Avenue and Juniper Street. Tragically, she never arrived at her friend's home and was never heard from again. In a detail that would later seem ominous, her purse was found left behind at her grandmother's residence. Her family, consumed with worry, officially reported her missing three days later, on May 25, 2007.
The investigation into Katesia's disappearance quickly focused on Mario Scott. That evening, firefighters responded to two separate fires at the house where Scott was staying; both fires were determined to be arson. As the investigation progressed, a grim picture of Katesia's final hours began to emerge. Authorities came to believe that Scott had beaten her to death inside the house that was later set ablaze. It is believed he then disposed of her body in a wooded area, only to return a week later to place her remains in a barrel and burn them. In December 2007, Mario Scott was charged with capital murder in connection with her death. He later pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 25 years in prison without the possibility of parole, in addition to a 22-year sentence he was already serving for the January 2007 attack on her. Despite the conviction, Katesia's body has never been recovered. The case of Katesia Weathers is a heartbreaking story of a young woman who sought protection from a violent relationship but disappeared before she could find safety. While her abuser was brought to justice, the fact that her remains have never been found leaves her family with a profound and unending sense of loss.
