On the morning of July 1, 2020, 67-year-old Theresa Ortiz, a resident of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, left a note for her husband, Carlos, saying she was going for a walk on the beach. This was a slight deviation from her usual routine of afternoon walks, a change she made to avoid the summer heat.
