On August 17, 2020, 69-year-old Frank Harding Minano, Jr., a respected Native educator and experienced outdoorsman, vanished while traveling from Fairbanks to Nenana, Alaska. He had reportedly stopped his vehicle somewhere between Ester and Nenana with the intention of gathering firewood. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a black and white flannel button-down shirt over another shirt, dark-colored pants, and grey and white shoes, possibly New Balance brand. He was also wearing a black baseball cap with the word "ALASKA" on the front. His family describes him as a mentor on culture, hunting, and subsistence living, making his sudden disappearance all the more perplexing for those who knew him. Concerns grew when Minano failed to return to Nenana as planned, and a report was filed with the Alaska State Troopers on the evening of August 17th. An immediate search led to the discovery of his unoccupied truck on Standard Creek Road, near the Old Nenana Highway. The search efforts expanded, involving ground searchers, tracking K9s, and a helicopter, but there was no sign of Minano in the heavily wooded area. Due to pre-existing medical conditions, a Silver Alert was issued to bring wider public attention to his case. A significant and troubling discovery was made 2.5 miles down the road from his vehicle, where a cabin had been broken into and a fire had been started inside; Minano's car keys were found at this location. Despite extensive search efforts and some reported potential sightings, Frank Minano, Jr. has not been located. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain a painful mystery for his family and community. His case is one of several unresolved missing persons cases in the Fairbanks area that have prompted community-led search initiatives and calls for more resources.
