In the spring of 1975, a family tragedy set the stage for the disappearance of two-year-old Christopher Bush in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Earlier that March, the home he shared with his mother, Gwendolyn, and his three older sisters was destroyed by a fire. While the family was unharmed, they were displaced and had to seek temporary shelter with various relatives. During this difficult time, a babysitter offered to care for young Christopher to ease his mother's burden as she searched for a new home for her family. On April 5, 1975, the male toddler was in the care of this babysitter when he was last seen in the Germantown neighborhood of the city. He was described as an African-American male, about 2'5' to 2'10' tall, and weighing between 25 and 40 pounds. He was reportedly wearing a blue denim coat with a white fur collar and light blue corduroy pants at the time of his disappearance.
The circumstances surrounding Christopher's disappearance are based on the account of his babysitter, Patricia 'Patty' Warwick. According to her, at approximately 10:00 a.m., she drove with Christopher to a delicatessen located near Chew Avenue and Maryland Street. She stated that she left the two-year-old unattended in her 1966 maroon Ford station wagon while she went inside the store for about ten minutes. When she returned to the vehicle, Christopher was gone. The only item left behind was the hat he had been wearing. Warwick told authorities that she believed the car doors were locked, but also mentioned that Christopher was capable of unlocking them himself. An hour reportedly passed before she notified the police of the boy's disappearance.
An extensive search was launched by the Philadelphia Police Department, with over one hundred officers scouring the area for days, but no trace of Christopher was ever found. The investigation yielded very little information, and the case quickly grew cold. There was no sign of a break-in to the vehicle, leading to speculation about how he could have vanished so quickly from the car. The theories ranged from the child wandering off on his own to being abducted by an unknown individual. Christopher's family has never given up hope, and the case remains open.
