Michael Miller, a 22-year-old student from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was last seen on October 23, 1983, during a hike on Mount Lafayette in Franconia, New Hampshire. He and his friends had begun the hike late in the afternoon, and while ascending the Old Bridle Path Trail, Miller decided to walk ahead, telling his friends, "Meet me at the top of the mountain." He was never seen again. His companions waited for him at the trailhead but eventually left when he didn't return.

Miller was not dressed for an extended stay outdoors, wearing a black leather jacket, jeans, and hiking boots, which were insufficient for the cold conditions on the mountain. The weather worsened in the following days, with freezing temperatures and hurricane-force winds hindering search efforts. An extensive search involving helicopters, search dogs, and rescue teams lasted for a week but found no trace of him.

There was an unconfirmed sighting of Miller near Greenleaf Hut, an Appalachian Mountain Club cabin located about a mile from the summit. However, this lead did not result in any breakthroughs, and despite multiple search efforts, no physical evidence of Miller has ever been found. His case remains unsolved, and he is presumed to have gotten lost or injured on the mountain.
