Wayne Dee Heath, a 37-year-old man, disappeared on April 1, 1986, while fishing with a friend on the South Fork of the Snake River in Bonneville County, Idaho. The pair had launched their boat near the Palisades Dam when an anchor rope became tangled in the boat's propeller, causing the boat to fill with water. Both men attempted to swim to shore, but Heath did not make it. Despite extensive search efforts, his body was never recovered at the time.
In a significant turn of events, a human tibia bone was discovered by a local fisherman on a sandbar in the Snake River in June 2009. This bone was sent to forensic specialists at the University of Texas, who, in 2013, extracted a DNA profile and entered it into the national database. Finally, in February 2024, advancements in DNA technology enabled investigators to match the bone to Heath through DNA reference samples provided by his family, officially bringing closure to the case almost 38 years later.
This long-awaited identification provided relief to Heath’s family and highlighted the importance of continued forensic advancements in solving cold cases. Heath’s case, after decades of uncertainty, was closed with the confirmation of his remains, bringing long-sought answers to those who knew and loved him.
