In the late summer of 1991, a 26-year-old man named Eugene Ramon Berry, also known by his nicknames 'Rabbit' or 'Ramon,' vanished from his home in Wilmington, North Carolina. On August 22, 1991, Eugene complained to his sister that he was having difficulty breathing. He told her he was going to Dillon's Grocery, a nearby store, to get some medicine for his asthma.
