The disappearance of James 'Jamie' Lubin Valdez from Booneville, Arkansas, has left his family searching for answers. In June 2021, the 47-year-old father, who had recently married, left his home after a disagreement with his wife. He had plans to visit his daughter in the nearby town of Ozark. At the time, James and his wife were residing with her mother. He was a recovering addict and had been sober for over a year.
He also managed diabetes with oral medication, which he reportedly did not take with him when he left. Friends last saw James a few days after he left home, when he had dinner with them and mentioned he intended to return to Booneville. He never made it back, and no one has reported hearing from him since.
A significant development in the case came approximately ten days after he was last seen, when his vehicle was discovered abandoned in a rural area of Sugar Grove, about ten miles from Booneville. The car, a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, was found near a local swimming spot known as 'The Bluff' or 'Bluff Hole' off of Dry Creek Road. The discovery was made by his wife's boss's husband, who was a friend of James and recognized the vehicle while in the area. The condition of the car raised several questions; the driver's seat was pushed forward and had a tear in it, and parts of the engine had been tampered with. Disturbingly, a message reading 'Help me He is near' was found written in the dirt on the back of the car. Some of James's personal belongings, including his health insurance card, were found on the ground near the vehicle, but his cell phone and car keys were missing.
The investigation into James's disappearance has been complex, filled with conflicting information and few solid leads. Search efforts, which included the use of cadaver dogs and a dive team, did not yield any significant findings. His family, desperate for answers, accessed his iCloud account, which reportedly showed his phone's last ping in an area that was underwater at the time of his disappearance. Over the years, his case has remained active, with his family holding onto hope. A new task force has recently been formed by the Booneville Police Department and the Logan County Sheriff's Office to re-examine evidence and coordinate efforts in his and other local missing person cases.
