On a fall afternoon, a recreational outing on the Delaware River turned into a tragedy that resulted in the disappearance of Joseph P. McLaughlin. On November 13, 2021, the 24-year-old from Deptford, New Jersey, was on a 19-foot boat with two friends near West Deptford in Gloucester County. The vessel began to take on water and ultimately capsized, plunging all three individuals into the river's cold water. While one of the men was successfully rescued by people on a passing boat, McLaughlin and his friend, 26-year-old Brian S. Palangi, were caught in the swift current and carried away.
