On March 13, 2022, Alexis Sanchez Azcuy, a 48-year-old man, was last heard from in Kermit, Texas. A truck driver for Tex Energy Resources, Sanchez Azcuy was a Cuban national who had moved to the United States in 2011. At the time of his disappearance, he resided in Odessa, Texas, but maintained connections to Florida. His wife, daughter, and mother were living in Cuba. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance began to unfold two days later, on March 15, when his brother discovered his semi-truck. The vehicle was found unlocked and abandoned on County Road 313 in a rural part of Winkler County. The discovery of the truck prompted his brother to report him missing to the Winkler County Sheriff's Office. The night following his last contact, his family received peculiar text messages from his phone. The messages claimed he was in trouble and had to go to Mexico, but his family doubted he had sent them. Inside the abandoned truck, investigators found traces of blood, though there were no immediate signs of a struggle. This discovery, coupled with the strange messages, pointed to a deeply concerning situation, and the case was deemed suspicious. Months after he was reported missing, the investigation took a grim turn when Sanchez Azcuy's remains were found scattered across Winkler County and neighboring Lea County, New Mexico. It became evident that he had been murdered and his body dismembered. Through the analysis of cell phone data and DNA evidence, investigators identified Alejandro Rodriguez Hernandez as a suspect. Hernandez was arrested in Hobbs, New Mexico, on July 11, 2022. He was later charged with murder and abuse of a corpse and extradited to Texas. In July 2025, a Winkler County jury found Hernandez guilty, sentencing him to life in prison for murder and an additional 20 years for abuse of a corpse. The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Texas Rangers, the FBI, and local law enforcement, brought a resolution to the case, though the motive was described as a "barbaric act committed out of greed".
