In the early hours of April 12, 2022, a 22-year-old man named Max Melo Alcantara was in communication with his family for what would be the last time. He told them he was about to cross the border from Miguel Aleman, Mexico, into Roma, Texas. The plan, however, reportedly went awry. The group he was with was allegedly chased by Border Patrol, causing them to scatter in the ensuing chaos. Max, a Hispanic male with black hair and brown eyes, was not seen again after this frantic separation. At the time of his disappearance, he was between 5'5" and 5'7" tall and weighed between 130 and 150 pounds. His family described the clothing he was last seen wearing as dark grey pants and a grey and blue zip-up jacket with a hood. He was also wearing black tennis shoes. Personal items he had with him included a cell phone in a case, his wallet, a bag, and his passport and ID card. Distinguishing physical features include deformed thumbnails on both hands from a past electrocution accident, large scars on his lower lip, and a scar on the right side of his chest. These details provide a somber picture of the young man who vanished into the night along the Texas border. The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is the primary investigating agency in this troubling case. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance highlight the often-perilous journey many undertake when crossing the border. The sudden and chaotic nature of the group's dispersal left Max vulnerable and alone. The lack of any contact since that night has left his family with unanswered questions and a painful void. The case serves as a heart-wrenching reminder of the human element behind immigration stories and the profound uncertainty that families of the missing endure.
