In the late summer of 2022, concern began to grow for a 28-year-old man from Linden, Alabama, named Damon Lee Gibson. The last confirmed sighting of him was at a fitness center located on U.S. Highway 80 in Demopolis. After this, he seemingly vanished, leaving his loved ones with unanswered questions and growing apprehension. The Demopolis Police Department initiated a missing person investigation, appealing to the public for any information that might shed light on his whereabouts.
Investigators released what little information they had, noting that he was last seen on Highway 80 East, but details regarding any vehicle he may have been driving were not available.
As the search for Damon continued, the case took a somber turn in April 2023 when human remains were discovered on Powe Road in Demopolis. The remains were later identified as those of Damon Lee Gibson, tragically confirming the worst fears of his family and the community. The discovery shifted the focus of the investigation from a missing person case to a homicide. The Demopolis Police Department, with assistance from several other agencies including the FBI and the 17th Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office, worked to piece together the events that led to his death.
The investigation led to the arrest of Michael Steven Bozeman, a 36-year-old from Demopolis, who was charged with the murder of Damon Gibson. Later, in December of the same year, the case saw further developments with the arrest of Taylor Danielle Sheffield of Demopolis and Michael Steven Bozeman, who was out on bond, on new charges of abuse of a corpse. This case, which began with a public plea for help in finding a missing man, evolved into a complex homicide investigation involving multiple agencies and resulting in serious charges against two individuals.
