In the spring of 1983, a young man named Desmond Joseph Runstedler, aged 27, vanished from the rural landscape of Alberta, leaving behind a life and a profound sense of mystery. Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, Desmond had moved west and was residing in a rented farmhouse a few kilometers east of Lougheed with roommates. At the time of his disappearance, he was employed at the Lougheed Hotel, having previously worked in construction. Friends and locals knew him as part of the social scene in the area. The exact date of his disappearance is unclear, with reports varying, though it is believed to have been in May of 1983. He was last seen hitchhiking on Highway 13, just east of Lougheed. It is thought he was attempting to make his way home, as he lived in a rented farmhouse nearby. On the night he was last seen, Desmond had attended a wedding dance and also spent time with people at a local campground. When he disappeared, he was wearing blue jeans, white high-top running shoes, and a blue cotton shirt or sweater. He was described as being 6'0' tall, weighing around 146 pounds, with brown curly hair and hazel eyes. A distinguishing feature was a scar on his right thumb.

The circumstances surrounding Desmond's disappearance are clouded with uncertainty. There were initial thoughts that he may have intended to travel back to his family's home in Ontario, but this was contradicted by the fact that all of his personal belongings were discovered left behind in the farmhouse he shared with friends. The investigation into his whereabouts was significantly delayed because he was not officially reported as a missing person until January 10, 1984. This delay occurred after the postmistress in Lougheed grew concerned about the growing pile of unclaimed mail for Desmond and contacted his parents in Ottawa. By the time law enforcement began their investigation, many months had passed, making the trail incredibly difficult to follow.

Over the years, extensive searches and inquiries were conducted by the Killam/Forestburg RCMP. Investigators checked telephone records, credit card and bank accounts, immigration and social services records, motor vehicle branch information, and unemployment insurance records, but none of these avenues yielded any information about Desmond's whereabouts or what might have happened to him. Despite the passage of time, his case remains open. The lack of any concrete evidence or leads has left his family and the community with unanswered questions. The overview of this case is one of a young man who vanished without a trace after a social gathering, with a significant delay in the reporting of his disappearance hindering the immediate investigation and leaving a void of information that has persisted for decades.

Last Seen: May 21, 1983
