In the late winter of 2007, a 14-year-old boy named Desmond Raymond Clayton Peter vanished from the community of Duncan, British Columbia, leaving behind a family and a case that would remain unsolved for years to come. A member of the Cowichan Tribes, Desmond was last seen by his grandmother on March 6, 2007, near the Trans-Canada Highway in Duncan. Another report states his family last saw him on March 9, 2007, near the old Malaspina College facility on Cowichan Way.
At the time of his disappearance, he was described as being five-foot-six and weighing 150 pounds, with a medium build, brown eyes, and straight black hair worn in a brush cut. He was known to sometimes go by the names "Desi," "Desmond Louie," and "Casey Louie."
Desmond was reportedly unhappy at home and had a history of leaving for days at a time, though he had always returned in the past. His grandmother reported him missing three days after he was last seen when he failed to make contact. In the year that followed his disappearance, there were several unconfirmed sightings of him in the Central Vancouver Island area, but none could be substantiated. The investigation into his disappearance was extensive, involving the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP and Cowichan Valley Search and Rescue, who conducted searches on land, in the air, and in the water. Local hospitals were also checked with no record of him.
The case has remained open, and over the years, Desmond's family, friends, police, and Cowichan Tribes have continued to seek answers. His case has been linked by some to the disappearances of other men from the Cowichan area around the same timeframe, raising concerns within the community. In 2017, on the 10-year anniversary of his disappearance, the RCMP issued a renewed plea for any information that might lead to his whereabouts. The investigation has since been transferred to the BC Missing Person's Centre for a fresh review of the evidence.
