In the late afternoon of Friday, September 5, 1997, Gordon James Mertz, a 44-year-old Fisheries Scientist, ended his work week like any other. Records from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans on East White Hills Road in St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador, show he logged off his computer shortly after 5:15 p.m. and left the building.
