On September 8, 1978, Brian McLean and his co-worker, Russell Thomas, were commercial fishing at their camp on MacDowell Lake, near MacDowell Lake First Nation Territory. Russell advised that they left in separate boats to lift nets. He went to the west side of the lake and pulled four nets, then to the east side of the lake and lifted two more nets.
