His mother only discovered something was amiss when she called his workplace and learned he wasn't scheduled to work. This carefully planned departure marked the beginning of a heart-wrenching mystery that would span continents. Upon his arrival in the United States, his movements remained largely unknown, but passport records indicate he crossed into Canada at Niagara Falls on the same day, January 25, and re-entered the U.S. on January 31.
The mystery deepened on February 2, 2002, when Vincent's backpack was discovered in a trash can in Prospect Park, located in Niagara Falls, New York. The contents of the bag provided a somber glimpse into his state of mind. Inside was his passport, a return plane ticket for February 9 that he was required to purchase upon entering the U.S., small amounts of American and Canadian currency, a pocket knife, and taxi receipts. Also found were 36 classical music CDs, a CD player, and a hardcover copy of J.D. Salinger's novel, 'The Catcher in the Rye.' Vincent was known to identify with the book's protagonist, a disillusioned teenager who runs away to New York City. This discovery was the last tangible trace of Vincent, leaving his family with more questions than answers.
