In the small, tight-knit community of St. Anthony, Newfoundland, Jennifer Lynn Hillier-Penney, a 38-year-old mother known for her compassionate and kind nature, vanished without a trace on the evening of November 30, 2016. She had been staying at the home of her estranged husband, Dean Penney, on Husky Drive to look after their youngest daughter while he was reportedly away. The following morning, December 1st, her daughter was awakened by the persistent sound of her mother's alarm. A search of the house revealed that while Jennifer was gone, all of her personal belongings, including her purse, phone, coat, and car keys, remained behind. Her car was still parked in the driveway, and there were no signs of a struggle or any indication that she had planned to leave. The days and weeks following Jennifer's disappearance were filled with anguish and a desperate search for answers. Her family and friends described her as a very family-oriented person who was well-liked within the community. In the time leading up to her disappearance, she had expressed fear about leaving her estranged husband and was taking steps to start a new life, including lining up a job interview in another town. In a move that her daughter believes showed she was living in fear, Jennifer had removed Dean Penney as the beneficiary on her life insurance policy just two weeks before she went missing, naming her two daughters instead. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) launched an investigation, which they soon deemed suspicious, treating it as a possible kidnapping and homicide. For years, the case saw little outward progress, leaving Jennifer's loved ones in a painful state of limbo. Community vigils were held as her family pleaded for any information that could lead to her whereabouts. The investigation, however, was quietly continuing, and in a major development nearly seven years after she vanished, Dean Penney was arrested in December 2023. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in the death of his estranged wife. Despite extensive searches on land and in the waters near St. Anthony, Jennifer's remains have never been found. The case against Dean Penney, who has pleaded not guilty, proceeded to trial, bringing a new phase of anguish and hope for justice for Jennifer's family.
