In the early morning hours of September 29, 1996, a 15-year-old girl named Melanie Nadia Ethier left a friend's home in New Liskeard, Ontario, to walk the short one-kilometer distance to her own house. It was a walk she had made before, but on this particular night, she never arrived. Melanie, a Grade 11 student at Ecole Secondaire Sainte-Marie, was a responsible and well-liked teenager who worked at a local daycare and was close to her family. The last confirmed sighting of her was around 2:00 a.m. as she set out on foot from the Pine Street East area. She was wearing a green Nike windbreaker, a white t-shirt with a blue heart Pepe logo, blue jeans, and black boots. Her disappearance, without a trace, has left her family and community with unanswered questions for decades. The search for Melanie began later that same day when her mother reported her missing. The New Liskeard Police, with assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), launched an extensive investigation that included searches by helicopter, canine units, and underwater recovery teams in the Wabi River. Despite these efforts, no physical evidence connected to her disappearance was ever found. The OPP have stated that they suspect foul play was involved in her vanishing. Over the years, hundreds of tips have been received and investigated, but none have led to a breakthrough in the case. The province of Ontario has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. The passage of time has not diminished the hope for answers in Melanie Ethier's case. Her mother has been a tireless advocate, working to keep her daughter's memory alive and appealing for anyone with information to come forward. The investigation remains open and active with the Temiskaming OPP. Several theories have been explored by investigators, including the possibility that she was abducted by a stranger or someone she knew. One person of interest, a convicted sex offender who was an acquaintance of the family, has since passed away.
