In the winter of 1992, a 27-year-old woman named Grayce Elisabeth Baxter was last seen in Toronto, Ontario. To her family, she was a successful computer executive, but in reality, she lived a secret life as a high-priced call girl. The last time anyone saw her was in the early morning hours of December 8, 1992. Concern grew when she vanished, leaving behind her 1989 black BMW, which was discovered abandoned two days later in the parking lot of the Gerrard Square mall. As investigators began to look into her disappearance, the carefully constructed facade of her life began to crumble, revealing a world her family never knew existed. The investigation into Grayce's disappearance soon took a dark turn. What began as a missing person case quickly evolved into a homicide investigation. A man named Patrick Daniel Johnson, a 23-year-old correctional officer at Toronto's Don Jail and a client of Grayce's, became a person of interest. The case broke open when Johnson pawned a ring and watch belonging to Grayce on December 21 of that year. Before police could apprehend him, Johnson penned a six-page letter to the Toronto Sun, admitting he had been with Grayce on the morning she disappeared. He later confessed to strangling her in a fit of rage. In his confession, Johnson provided a gruesome account of what happened after he killed Grayce. He admitted to dismembering her body and disposing of her remains in a dumpster behind his apartment building. This led to an extensive but ultimately fruitless search of a Pickering garbage dump, where police sifted through millions of kilograms of garbage in an attempt to find her. Despite the fact that her body was never recovered, Patrick Johnson was charged and convicted of second-degree murder, receiving a life sentence. The case of Grayce Elisabeth Baxter is a tragic story that highlights the dangers faced by those in marginalized communities and the painful secrets that can lie beneath the surface of a seemingly successful life. Although a conviction was secured, the inability to locate her remains has left her loved ones without a final resting place to visit and a lingering sense of unresolved loss.
