On June 27, 1973, Robert Scott Ellis and a friend went fishing on Reed Lake in Manitoba. They left in the morning around 9:30 a.m. and fished until about 6:00 p.m. when they decided to return home. As the day progressed, the weather deteriorated and the water became quite rough. They began to take on water over the sides of the canoe.
