Cyril Detimmerman and a friend left Brandon, Manitoba, on April 10, 1976 on the Assiniboine River to travel to Treherne. Cyril was experienced in navigating the river, but the water levels were very high due to spring flooding. The pair soon encountered strong currents and large amounts of debris in the river.
