A member of St. Mary's First Nation, also known as Sitansisk, Erin was last seen on the evening of December 27, 2021. The last confirmed sighting of her was at the St. Mary's Smoke Shop on Fredericton's Northside. On the day she vanished, she was wearing blue jeans, a dark brown jacket, and black boots. Erin is described as being approximately 5'2" to 5'3" tall and weighing around 115 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair styled with bangs. Her family had last seen her two days prior, on Christmas Day, before she was captured on security footage at the smoke shop, a final image before she went missing. The investigation into Erin's disappearance quickly took a somber turn. The Fredericton Police Force has stated that they are treating her case as suspicious and believe she may have been a victim of foul play. In fact, investigators have indicated they are investigating her disappearance as a homicide. Her family has been open about her struggles with addiction, but they emphasize that this does not define who she was. They remember her as a fun, outspoken, and family-oriented person who would not have voluntarily left her four children. Chillingly, a few years before she disappeared, Erin wrote a social media post that now serves as a haunting premonition. She wrote, "If there ever comes a time where I disappear … please know: I did not voluntarily leave my family... know that someone took me against my will worse... Being an indigenous woman in Canada, there is a target on my back." The search for answers in Erin Brooks's case has been relentless, fueled by her family's determination and community support. Vigils have been held and searches have been conducted in the areas around Fredericton. In an effort to generate new leads, a substantial reward of $65,000 has been offered by anonymous donors for information that helps to find her. Erin’s story has gained national and international attention, notably being featured on the Paramount+ docuseries "Never Seen Again," which police hope will bring forth new information. Despite these efforts, what happened to Erin Brooks after she left the smoke shop remains a mystery. The case is an active investigation, a painful example of the ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada, leaving a family, including her parents and sister, without closure and a community waiting for her to come home.
