In an effort to piece together the timeline of events, investigators made a public appeal for information, specifically asking to speak with two young women who were believed to have been sitting on a park bench near the river on the afternoon of March 25th, as it was thought they might have seen something that could aid the investigation. It came to light that on the afternoon of March 25th, a witness had contacted the Trois-Rivières police to report seeing what they believed was a person in the waters of the St. Lawrence River. The handling of this initial report by the local police became a matter of concern, leading to the involvement of the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), which is tasked with investigating serious incidents involving police officers in Québec. The BEI launched an independent investigation into the actions of the Trois-Rivières police service in relation to this witness call.
