A bread knife was also missing from the kitchen, yet there were no signs of a struggle, and no one in the building reported hearing any unusual noises. The investigation into Diane's disappearance took an even stranger turn when police discovered another woman named Diane Bélanger, who shared the same date of birth, had been admitted to a local hospital after a severe beating. This woman, who lived in the same area, told the lead investigator, Jean-Claude Rochon, that she believed someone from her "network" was trying to kill her. She suggested that the disappearance of the other Diane Bélanger was likely a case of mistaken identity. She also provided a tip that Diane's body might be buried in Chertsey, a municipality in the Lanaudière region of Québec.
