In the autumn of 1991, a 41-year-old Indigenous man named Alexander John Belcourt, also known as Alex or "Bumly", was last seen in the downtown core of Edmonton, Alberta. The last point of contact his family had with him was in September of that year. Alexander was a man with black hair, brown eyes, and a distinctive scar on his upper lip, standing at five feet seven inches tall and weighing between 161 and 165 pounds. Originally from Grouard, a community 360 kilometers northwest of Edmonton, he grew up in a family with five other siblings and was remembered by his sisters as an intelligent, happy-go-lucky, and jolly young man who performed well in school. In his adult years, Alexander made the journey to Edmonton with the hope of finding work, a common pursuit for many seeking opportunity in the city. Life in the city, however, presented significant challenges for Alexander. He was unable to secure employment and subsequently struggled with alcohol and solvent addiction, which led to him living on the streets of Edmonton. Despite the hardships he faced, Alexander maintained a connection with his family. For a time, he would make collect calls to them a few times each year to keep in touch. These calls, a lifeline to his loved ones, abruptly stopped in 1989. Worried by the sudden silence, his family members traveled to Edmonton on several occasions in an attempt to find him. They put up posters and offered a small reward for any information regarding his whereabouts, but their efforts yielded no answers. The years stretched on without a word, and in November of 1995, his family officially reported him as a missing person to the police. Over the many years that have passed since Alexander's disappearance, his family, which includes two sons, two daughters, and numerous grandchildren, has been left without closure. His nephew shared that during one of the family's searches in Edmonton, a street minister told him he had heard that Alexander had been killed. The family has long believed that he is no longer alive, as it was uncharacteristic of him to go for so long without contacting them in some way. The case of Alexander John Belcourt is an overview of a man who moved to a city for a better life but fell into difficult circumstances, ultimately vanishing without a trace. It is the story of a loving brother, father, and grandfather whose Indigenous family has been left to wonder about his fate for more than three decades, holding onto hope for answers in a disappearance that has grown cold with the passage of time.
